# American Studies 201: American Studies and American Music: Classic Texts and Recent Trends in Scholarship

 Semester: Fall

|

 Year offered: 2019

The course explored methodologies in American Studies. It also initiated a collaborative project (with Christina Linklater of the Harvard Music Library) curating an exhibit about the scholar Eileen Southern and her pathbreaking book *The Music of Black Americans* (first published in 1971). Southern was the first African American woman tenured in Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and a major collection of her papers exists in the Harvard University Archive.
